Weathering the storm

It was still raining when I woke up. At least I was dry and and warm. I spent the morning stretching out my breakfast to kill the time and working on my journal. I also attempted to dry clothing out by wearing the wet items or stuffing them into my shirt while inside my sleeping bag. By noon I had dried most everything but some gloves and a nylon wind jacket.

Every so often the rain would stop briefly, and I or the others would go out and make the rounds to the other tents and see how everyone was doing. Tim B and Helen shared some Raspberry Crumble dessert during one of these excursions. Tim B commented that waiting out this weather was much easier after a successful summit, than before. Tim was also impressed with the doily since I was staying dry and it hadn't collapsed from the wind.

Drying clothes

Then at 2:30 pm, almost 24 hours exactly after it started, the rain stopped and the sun returned. We were deliriously happy and rushed around hanging clothes from bushes to dry them out. Tim B and Helen resorted all their food and then the Tim's and I tossed the Life is Good frisbee around.

Marmot

Later we walked back up to the moraine for a last close-up look at Gannett. The marmots and pikas were out in full force, the marmots usually standing up and wondering if we would feed them. A few climbers we meet had reached the summit in a total whiteout today.

Dinner on the couch

Dinner took place at the "penthouse" - Cheryl and Tim's campsite higher up above us among a collection of glacial erratic boulders. Tim D cooked up a quesadilla appetizer and I brought out the 4 person dessert I'd been keeping back for the right moment - the Grand Canyon Cheesecake.

We looked across the valley at the route we hoped to take the next day that would lead to a high-level traverse of the continental divide and eventually back to our trailhead. It would be highly dependent on the weather, but should offer great views and let us repeat very little of our hike in.
