The top of Maryland:
Backbone Mountain
Elevation:3,360 feet
Location:east of Silver Lake, WV
Date:11/05/2001

After an easy drive from Pennsylvania's Mount Davis, I pulled up at the trailhead to Maryland's Backbone Mountain.

The trail actually starts in West Virginia, and follows some old logging roads to the ridge top. Then you hike north on the ridge for a bit, passing a MD-WV border marker, and then hit the highpoint. There's a nice sign marking the point, as well as a register and certificates of completion you can take and fill out to commemorate your hike. There's a clearing at the highpoint, allowing a view to the east, but the day had grown overcast and gray. Once again, I had the summit to myself, but noticed in the register that a group from Unionville, IN had been here just a few days before (Unionville is just north-east of Bloomington).

Saw another deer on my way back to the car, then headed further south to West Virginia's Spruce Knob.
